Mel Who?

An Excess of Love

Hilarious Blooper

I met so many amazing Irishmen while researching An Excess of Love that I was invited to the premiere of the movie about Michael Collins, the hero of the Easter Rising.  The film starred Liam Neeson, who had long been one of my favorite actors.

Collins was killed shortly after the Easter Rising and the story of his life and controversial death  played a major role in An Excess of Love.  I confess that  while writing, I’d grown very fond of this complex rebel who had led so heroic a struggle against the British Empire that he had grown quite legendary.

After the movie’s premiere, a very social friend threw a party that to my delight included Liam Neeson on the guest list.  I was elated and eager to meet him and to learn how he had studied for the difficult part.  He turned out to be not merely a great actor but a charming and rather erudite man who had researched Michael Collins so thoroughly that I spent the entire dinner party deeply engaged in conversation with him about the man and his sad murder.

Liam and I had a lively discussion about who had signed the order for Mick Collin’s assassination and who had known about it before hand but didn’t intervene to save him.  Not everyone in that room full of Irishmen would have agreed about that.

Happy Oblivion

In fact, I was so entranced by the conversation and having such a good time, I was quite oblivious to the other guests at the party, as became apparent the following day when I called my hostess to say thank you for the great evening.

I babbled on about Liam until she finally broke in and said, “I get it!  You thought he was great, but what did you think about Mel?”

“Mel who?” I asked.

“Mel Gibson, you ninny!” she answered laughing.  “Don’t tell me you didn’t notice him.  Every woman there was vying for his attention.”

Everyone but me, I guess!

She got a good laugh out of both my oblivion and my chagrin.

Me, too!

So did I!
