How to Disable a Gulfstream or a Dinner Party

So there I was at a rather grand dinner party on Palm Beach just after The Playground of the Gods had begun to hit the bestseller lists. Hollywood intended to make a movie of it and I was as excited as a child at Christmas!

Dinner was elegant and merry as was always the case with my hostess’s gorgeous parties and I was having a fine old time being congratulated about my new book’s success and helping everybody imagine who should play which high-flying power broker in the movie.

At least until the woman seated directly across the table from me spoke up, drawing everyone’s attention with her sharp tone.

“You know not everyone is  so happy about this book of yours!” she snapped,

quieting the conversation all around the table in a heartbeat.

“And why on earth is that? ” I asked, genuinely wondering what her answer would be.

“My brother owns Gulfstream, ” she said, ” and I can tell you  he didn’t take kindly to your giving everyone in the world a quick course in how  to disable a G-4.”

Uh-oh! I thought, chagrined and suddenly concerned.  In my story, a battle-royal breaks out between the men and the women on a South Sea Island Paradise where they’re vacationing, and as the tensions rise, each side hijacks a piece of the plane so neither side can leave.

“You mean it really could work just as I described?” I blurted, feeling pretty foolish for not worrying about that possibility! Never having personally dismantled an aircraft, I’d relied on the word of a friend who owns and loves his planes.

If he knew how to do it, I figured everybody in his world must know how to do it!

“You’re damned right it could!” she said and then  (thank God!) burst into a rollicking gale of laughter.

“I mean, I gave him the book as a present just to see the expression on his face when he realized what you’d done! It was really priceless.”

Then seeing my distress, she took pity on me and said, “I’m just teasing you!  He was definitely stunned by the plot you cooked up, but he was a  really good sport about it.”

She turned out to be a lot of fun and was obviously getting a kick out of the whole story but I have to tell you it gave me a turn.  I’d honestly never considered that my story of lust, love and murder in a tropical Paradise  would inspire anybody on earth to dismantle a Gulfstream jet!

Although, now that I think of it, one reviewer did say, “The Playground of the Gods is a place where the men are men…and the women are dangerous!”

So maybe I should have!
